“...meanwhile ...back at The Ranch ...life expands
...worries contract ...time disappears (for a while)
...friendship and tranquitilty prevails...
in these conditions,
one’s spirit finds plenty of inner elbow room
to grow and breathe and smile...
...you may say i had an extraordinary time!!!”

“An artists’ retreat, [The Double J Art Ranch] is like no other. In this Texas style paradise, an aerie perched high above the river, you become an active part of the place while staying here. Everything says, ‘Yes, let’s see what happens.’ This is what a world made by artists looks and feels like: the old dude ranch of 1950s cowboy movies still lives, with the evidence of the 21st century habitation by very cool people integrated as if this were the way it was always meant to be. Once you have been here it will call you back.”

James Evans is best known for his photographs of the landscape of the Big Bend region of Texas and the resilient people who live there. His portraiture reveals Evans’ uncanny ability to photograph his subjects in a manner that echoes the character of the wide-open country. Of Missing Persons, the title of a Jackson Browne song about the death of musician and producer, Lowell George inspired Evans’ upcoming show of the same name. “Does it take a death to learn what life is worth,” sings Browne. The show is a collection of images of friend who are no longer with us.
“At the Art Ranch things reduce to cosmological essentials. There’s the enfolding hacienda itself to represent the world. The river for time. And then the dogs - of every shape and disposition - here and there wherever you go, attending spirits.”
